To recruit good lab members, Staffing the Lab: Perspectives from Both Sides of the Bench, a book developed by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, recommends creating a Web site about your lab with postings of open positions, as the Internet is how people search for jobs these days. You might also want to consider posting your needs on other job sites, such as the Pitt Postdoctoral Positions Web site, the University of Pittsburgh Employment Web site, and PittSource, a job search tool maintained by the Office of Human Resources. In addition, Pitt’s Office of Academic Career Development site offers a list of Web sites, some of which deal with job opportunities.
In At the Helm: A Laboratory Navigator, author Kathy Barker recommends continually searching for potential job candidates, as you may find good people in unlikely places, such as while networking at a professional conference. In addition, cast your net as broadly as possible by letting colleagues know you’re hiring and by spreading the word to friends and others that you’ve got lab positions to fill.
