Regulations are a basic component of any research endeavor, and the University of Pittsburgh has very clearly outlined the steps required to remain in compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines. One of the first things to realize is that the development and implementation of research regulations is an ongoing process that is largely the result of responses to past practices that have been found to be harmful or unethical. The University has many resources available to guide researchers through the regulatory and compliance process. To find the correct set of resources, you need to first answer one question: What type of research are you conducting?
