The Center for Assistance in Research using eRecord (CARe) provides a centralized service to help investigators obtain UPMC electronic medical record (EMR) data for research purposes. CARe has the technical and regulatory expertise to facilitate the safe, secure, and compliant use of data from the multiple electronic medical record systems at UPMC. CARe’s technical staff can facilitate data extractions and the development of research recruitment alerts for IRB-approved research projects. If researchers require de-identified data, CARe can provide honest broker services. In addition, CARe offers assistance with preparatory-to-research data, letters of support, and budget justifications related to the use of UPMC EMR data for research.
CARe’s regulatory staff reviews all IRB research projects that use the UPMC EMR for research purposes. CTSI's Regulatory Knowledge and Support Core can assist researchers using CARe with their IRB submission, including requests for limited data sets, data use agreements between institutions, and other aspects of regulatory compliance.
